The initial intention was to restore the mansion to its original mid-19th century appearance. However, as the home represented so much of Southwest Virginia’s culture and history, the decision was made to preserve, restore, and open the home to teach future generations how every aspect of history affects and impacts social and cultural issues of today. A true reversal from its original intent to represent a slave holding plantation. A chance to give back!
While the preservation of physical artifacts is crucial to the project's success, equally important is the interpretation of these artifacts and their connections to the surrounding environment and people. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage in a distinctive form of historical interpretation, viewing, learning, and participating in demonstrations that represent nineteenth-century domestic life. These programs not only depict the functionality of daily tasks but also the human relationships tied to them. Life on a large plantation was often segregated both physically and socially. Visitors will have the chance to traverse these divides, experience life as it was, and then be encouraged to apply this understanding to today's social dynamics.
Each experience is customizable to a visitor's interests, offering an à la carte experience unlike any other cultural or historical site. This is made possible by allowing visitors to 'touch' history, actively participating in daily life reenactments and social interactions. Interactive activities will occur throughout the home and grounds, providing insights into the historical importance of specific artifacts, events, daily chores, and the accurate portrayal of the people involved and their roles. All programs will adhere to Virginia's Standards of Learning (SOLs) and Core Curriculum Standards, enabling educators to supplement Virginia history lessons, available both on-site and through outreach programs in academic settings.
Once restoration is complete, the Octagon House and grounds will be a one-of-a-kind venue in which to host your private, corporate, or public events. Surrounded by history, guests will be able to enjoy the beauty of the home, while having the unique opportunity to dismantle myths, learn historical truths, and leave with a sense of greater social responsibility.
