The home was designated a National and Virginia State landmark in the 1980’s but the drive to save and restore her were not realized until 2003 when purchased by a local family. A non-profit foundation was established in 2014 and the home was gifted with the goal of restoration and public usage as a history, culture, and event venue. After ten years of planning and fundraising efforts, restoration construction began in May of 2024. The long-awaited rebirth of this landmark is finally being realized. Though born of dreams and forced labor, the Octagon House will now help learn our history, live for today, and teach for the future, building a more inclusive understanding of history and how it shapes our cultural lives, beliefs, and choices today.
